How to Clean Behind the Refrigerator

Cleaning behind the refrigerator is important not only for sanitary reasons but it can also improve the efficiency of the appliance. The first step is to pull the refrigerator out away from the wall about half way by grabbing it on both sides and gently rolling it forward. Find the power cord and remove it from the wall, while your back there make sure to turn off the water line if your refrigerator has an ice make.

Next, you will need to use a refrigerator-coil brush to dust around the condenser coils. These brushes can be found at most local hardware stores for under $10. Some refrigerators will have a removable cover protecting the coils that will need to be unscrewed or snapped off before cleaning.

While the refrigerator is pulled forward, first vacuum then mop the floor. Using a mixture of 1/3 cup white vinegar and 1/2 gallon of warm water will work as an efficient mopping solution.

After the floor has dried, plug the refrigerator back in and turn the water line back on. Gently push the refrigerator back into place and the job is complete.
